Projection 2 – Iteration 4

These are two more portrait series I created for Unit 3, Projection 2. The first is a continuation of Projection 1: I took the bag objects I had previously photographed from people and transformed them into literal faces—creating portraits made entirely out of the objects each person carried in their bag.

The second series explored the concept of the status bag or “It” bag, and its association with famous women—actresses, singers, and cultural icons like Jane Birkin or Grace Kelly. It’s as if the woman doesn’t just carry the bag; she becomes the bag. The bag absorbs her legacy and personality, whether she intends it to or not. For instance, Jane Birkin is now predominantly known through the iconic Birkin bag, which has become almost inseparable from her identity. These portraits aim to merge object and human into a single, unified image.

Looking at both series now, I notice a slight uneasiness to them. There’s something a bit spooky about them, even the object portraits have an eerie quality, reminiscent of Frankenstein. But I think that unsettling feeling aligns quite well with the nature of my enquiry.
